If you speak insufficient Dutch, you can take the theory exam in Flanders with audio translation in French, German, or English. The questions are read aloud to you first in Dutch and then in your chosen language through headphones. The text on your screen always remains in Dutch. You will pay an additional fee of approximately 35 to 40 euros for this.
How does the audio translation work?
Since January 1, 2023, the exam centers no longer use live interpreters but instead use audio translation. You will hear each question and answer first in Dutch and then in the language of your choice (French, German, or English). Due to language legislation, the text on the screen always remains in Dutch; only the audio is translated.
You simply make an appointment at the exam center of your choice and inform the desk at your registration that you want to use the audio translation. Do this immediately, as it needs to be set up in advance.
In which language do you take the exam?
Officially, you take the exam in Flanders in Dutch, in Wallonia in French, and in the exam center of Eupen in German. An exam in another language is not legally possible: the audio translation is therefore a tool on top of the Dutch-language exam, not a separate exam in another language.
What does it cost?
The audio translation costs an additional fee of approximately 35 to 40 euros on top of the regular exam fee. This rate is indexed, so confirm the exact amount with your exam center.
