In Belgium, the maximum speed depends on the region and the road type. Within the built-up area, you may drive 50 km/h, in Brussels 30 km/h. Outside the built-up area, it is 70 km/h in Flanders and Brussels, and 90 km/h in Wallonia. On the motorway, it is 120 km/h everywhere. Traffic signs always take precedence over these standard rules.

Within the built-up area
The standard limit is 50 km/h in Flanders and Wallonia. In the Brussels-Capital Region, it is 30 km/h, unless signs indicate otherwise locally.
Outside the built-up area
If there are no signs, the speed limit on regular roads is: 70 km/h in Flanders and Brussels, 90 km/h in Wallonia.
There is one important exception that lifts the regional boundary: if you are outside the built-up area on a road with at least two lanes in your direction, where the directions are separated by a physical median (guardrail or concrete structure), you may drive 120 km/h throughout Belgium.

Specific zones
| Zone | Max. speed | Important to know |
|---|---|---|
| Zone 30 and bicycle street | 30 km/h | In a bicycle street, you must not overtake cyclists. |
| Residential area or yard | 20 km/h | Pedestrians may use the full width of the road. |
| Raised structure (speed bump) | 30 km/h | Applies at the location of the speed bump. |
Always adjust your speed
According to Article 10 of the road code, you must continuously adjust your speed to the weather and the condition of the road. The maximum speed is therefore not always the correct speed. Driving abnormally slowly without valid reason is also punishable if it causes danger or obstruction.
